The United States Navy has developed an N-class division system to classify fire-resistant boundaries, similar to the system of A-class divisions administered by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The N-class divisions are intended to protect a ship from fire spread as a result of typical shipboard fires, accidents (involving fuel, aircraft, or ammunition), and fires induced by threat weapons-hazards that are not normally considered in commercial ship design. The N-class division rating enables the fire performance of the divisions to be addressed as a system, rather than using individual fire performance requirements for each of the division components, such as bulkheads, decks, penetrations, etc. The following definitions apply.
