RESPONSE OF GONADOTROPHIN TREATMENT IN POSTPARTUM ANOESTRUS BUFFALOES AFTER SUPPLEMENTARY FEEDING

Summer anoestrus is major reproductive disorder in buffaloes, leading to long inter-calving intervals in these animals. Moreover, it leads to seasonality in calving pattern of buffaloes and hence excess of milk production during winter and scarcity ofmilk during summer months. Various hormonal preparations have been employed for the treatment of summer anoestrus (Khan et al, 1995 and Nanda, et al, 2003), but the results have been disappointing due to the failure to induce a fertile ovulation. In Northern India scarcity of green fodder is highly prevalent during summer months, which could be responsible for poor response of hormonal treatment during this period. Urea molasses multinutrient block (UMMB) is a cheap source of energy and protein to improve the nutritional status of ruminants (Brar and Nanda, 2002). The present study was undertaken to assess the effect of supplementary feeding of urea molasses multinutrient to postpartum anoestrus buffaloes on the efficiency of hormonal treatment.
