On 17 October, members of the European Parliament agreed on the amendments they would like to see introduced to the forthcoming cross-sector Product Safety and Market Surveillance Package (PSMSP). These recommendations were published in mid-September, and are based on a text initially proposed in February by the European Commission. They are important as they will form the basis for negotiations with the Council of Ministers. Gaining an accord quickly will be critical to achieving a first reading agreement and passing the two regulations into law in 2014. It is scheduled that both regulations will enter into force on 1 January 2015.
