Central nervous system demyelinating autoimmune diseases are characterised by inflammatory changes of the white matter, and include optic neuritis, transverse myelitis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis and multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is the most common neurodegenerative condition affecting young people. There is no cure and only theories as to the cause. This article looks at multiple sclerosis and the treatments available. The aims of the treatments are to modify the disease's course by slowing progression, preventing future relapses and reducing disability. Each of the main treatments used are looked at, and advice for clinicians regarding managing common issues are presented.
