Principles of a universal technique of identification of Black Sea cold intermediate waters (CIWs) and calculation of alternative CIW borders as surfaces of the maximum temperature variability are developed. It is shown that the proposed methods provide the maximum approximation of CIW to the real position of cold intermediate waters. The necessity of essential corrections of the characteristics of CIWs located between conditional borders (isothermal and isopycnic surfaces) is proved.
