RATOONING ABILITY OF NEW PROMISING VARIETIES OF SUGARCANE UNDER BHAT SOIL CONDITION

The ratooning ability of 14 mid-late maturing varieties, viz. Co 0233, Co 0235, Co 0236, CoSe 01424, CoSe 01434, UP 0097, UP 0098, UP 01105, UP 01108, CoP 02182, BO 146, BO 147, CoBIn 02173 and CoBIn 90006 was studied with respect to cane yield, growth parameters and quality attributes against three standard varieties CoSe 92423, CoP 9301 and BO 91. under Bhat soil. The fertilizer, irrigation and cultural practices were applied to the ratoon crop as per recommendation. The soil type of experimental plot was calcareous. The results showed that CoSe 01434 was excellent in cane yield (81.981/ ha) and stalk length (219 cm) followed by UP 0097 (89.99 t/ha)for yield. Variety U P 0097 was found to be most promising for quality characters like sucrose per cent. The number of millable cane was highest in CoP 02182 (120) as compared to all the checks. UP 0097 exhibited better performance than standards CoSe 92423 and BO 91 for stalk weight, cane yield, brix, sucrose per cent in juice, CCS% and CCS t/ha.
