Effect of dates of planting on different phenophases of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum).

A field experiment was conducted from 1997 to 2001 in Orissa, India, to determine the effect of six planting dates from October to March on different phenophases of sugarcane cv. Co6304. Seedling emergence was the quickest (10-13 days for initiation and 35 days for completion) and the emergence capacity (%) was the highest (65 to 67.5%) when sugarcane was planted in October and March. Sugarcane planted in November and December took the maximum number of days for emergence (15-20 days for initiation and 55 days for completion). January-plant crop recorded the lowest emergence capacity (55.8%). Tillering phase commenced 40, 80, 60, 48, 45 and 40 days after planting (DAP) and tiller production continued up to 90, 120, 105, 100, 100 and 125 DAP when planting was done in October, November, December, January, February and March, respectively. The crop took maximum number of days (407) to attain maturity in October planting. The effective tillering phase occupied one to two weeks after completion of emergence and only 6 to 11% tillers (excluding the mother plants) became effective when the crop was planted before January. Beyond January, planting all the tillers either perished or remained immature before or at harvest and did not contribute to yield. Duration to maturity progressively decreased to a minimum of 322 days in March planting. Per day production was maximum (385 kg/ha) in October planting and minimum (311 kg/ha) in February planting..
