Field experiments were conducted during 2003-06 to evaluate the effects of different methods and dates of N application on sugarcane production and N use efficiency in Haryana, India. The treatments were: T1, recommended rate of N at 150 kg/ha (50 kg as basal, 50 kg at second irrigation and 50 kg at fourth irrigation); T2, basal 20 kg as diammonium phosphate (DAP) + 50 kg at second irrigation + 50 kg at fourth irrigation; T3, basal 20 kg as DAP + 65 kg at second irrigation + 65 kg at fourth irrigation; and T4, basal 20 kg as DAP + 3 sprays at 2.5% urea in May and June + 50 kg at second irrigation + 50 kg at fourth irrigation. Results showed that recommended N at 150 kg/ha (plant crop) and 225 kg N/ha for ratoon, through 3 sprays of 2.5% urea + remaining N through soil application increased the cane yield, yield attributing characters, N content in index leaves in both plant and ratoon crops, and improved the juice quality, compared to application of whole N through soil. Cutting and shifting the basal dose of N did not significantly improve the performance compared to the recommended rate and method of N application. However, the reduction of N from the basal N application reduced cane yield and yield attributing characters in both plant and ratoon crops.
