A field experiment was conducted at the Central Sugarcane Research Station, Padegaon, Mato Grosso do Sul, India, during 2002 to 2005, to assess the possibility to replace inorganic fertilizers by organic matter and its effect on bio-physico-chemical properties of soil, yield and quality of pre-seasonal sugarcane. The six treatments used were NPK fertilizers, FYM, biofertilizers, green manure, vermicompost and composted sulfitation press mud. Application of recommended dose of NPK with FYM and the treatment of application of recommended dose of NPK with trash incorporation recorded significantly higher cane (117 and 107 tonnes/ha) and commercial cane sugar (CCS) yields (16.5 and 15.42 tonnes/ha) for plant cane and ratoon crop, respectively. Results clearly indicated that the use of inorganic fertilizers alone or organic manures alone were not found beneficial for sugarcane crops as compared to integrated use of inorganics and organics.
