A great engineer of our time

Denis Rooke was born in South East London into an ordinary working family. At the age of three he developed a medical problem and spent the next four years in and out of hospital undergoing a good deal of surgery. The problem was however resolved and he was determined to catch up. He gained a county scholarship which got him into grammar school and then, as war broke out, he went to Addey and Stanhope School in Depford which gave a high priority to science.
