摘要

Angry UK merchants slammed the European Union directive dealing with the recycling of end-of-life vehicles (ELV) at the Northern Metals Assn annual meeting on March 8. During the meeting in Sheffield, merchants also expressed concern about poor trading conditions in recent times.Merchants criticised the directive as "open to misinterpretation" and "ill-conceived". The European Parliament recently voted in favour of the ELV directive, which obliges car manufacturers to shoulder responsibility for the recycling of vehicles at the end of their useful lives. Car manufacturers have since turned to the scrap industry in order to discuss possible co-operation in meeting the directive's requirements.
