Foot and mouth disease is enzootic in India and its control is generally practiced by regular vaccinating the animals with a polyvalent vaccine incorporating O, A, G and Asia-1. Out of 32 subtypes reported against type A, Subtype A10 and A22 are prevalent in India. Plaque assay has been employed for selection, isolation, characterization and qualification of FMD virus populations (Pay et al. 1964; Seibold et al., 1961; Cottral et al., 1966). In the present study an attempt has been made to compare the two vaccine strains of type A (subtype A10 and A22) in terms of their growth and plaque characteristics in BHK21 cells.
