An unusual case of oestrual vaginal prolapse in a heifer

A Jersey crossbred heifer aged three and half years from Embalam village, Pondicherry was reported to the Veterinary Ambulatory Clinic run by the Rajiv Gandhi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, pondicherry, with the history of protrusion ofthe vaginal wall through the vulval lips during every oestrum with intermittent straining. The owner reported that the heifer was born in h!s own farm and was coming to oestrum regularly every twenty days but so far did not bred. The owner also reportedthat the heifer's dam seldom had the problem of the prolapse of the genital tract either during oestrum or during peri-parturient period. Clinical examination revealed protrusion of congested oedematous vagina through the vulva (Fig). The prolapsed masswas cleaned with KMnO_4 solution and then replaced in-situ after catheterizing the urinary bladder. Rectal examination revealed tonicity of uterine horns and a matured follicle in the right ovary. On gentle massaging, clear oestrual mucous discharge wasnoticed from the vaginal passage. The animal was treated with intramuscular injection of hydroxy progesterone 500 mg as a single dose and strepto-penicillin 2.5 G daily for five days and the owner was advised to report after ten days for re-examination.
