A modified coagglutination test for detection of heat-labile enterotoxin of Escherichia coli

A modified coagglutination test for detection of heat-labile (LT) enterotoxin of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) was performed in the capillary as well as on the slide (slide agglutination test) and, evaluated for its feasibility in routine clinical laboratory and field investigations. A total of 115 E. coli strains isolated from cases of diarrhoea were tested for LT production by coagglutination test and the results were compared with other serological tests namely Latex agglutination test,Biken test and Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell-line assay. With the detection,of 92 LT producing E. coli strains, coagglutination test showed a good correlation with the above three tests, which detected 89, 93 and 94 LT producers, respectively.
