PATHOLOGICAL LESIONS ASSOCIATED WITH HELMINTHIASIS IN DOMESTIC FOWLS IN NIGERIA

1080 gastrointestinal tracts (GIT) were used to study the pathology of poultry helminthiasis in arid North-Eastern Nigeria. The gross as well as histopathological lesions caused due to cestode and nematode infestations were studied, which included oedema, distention with catarrhal exudate, petechial haemorrhages, generalised thickening of intestinal mucosa, enteritis, congulative necrosis and desquamation of mucosal epithelium, massive infiltration of heterophils, mononuclear cells and eosinophils. Parasitic gastroenteritis in poultry has great tendency to aggravate conditions caused by enteric forms of certain viral diseases such as Newcastle and Gumboro, since they share common target organ.
