Correlation studies between seedlings and their settlings in inter varietal crosses of sugarcane for yield and quality traits.

Field experiments were conducted in Pusa, Bihar, India, during the 2003/04 and 2004/05 cropping seasons, to study the correlation between seedlings of 15 biparental sugarcane crosses and their settling generations. Among the yield attributes, number of tillers per clump, number of millable canes per clump, plant height and single cane weight was found highly significantly correlated with cane yield at both the stages, i.e. seedling and settling stages, while cane diameter and number of leaves per plant were found significantly correlated to cane yield at the seedling stage only. Brix content in November and December were observed non-significant towards cane yield at both the stages. Results indicated that the number of tillers per clump, number of millable canes per clump, plant height and single cane weight are the most reliable characters for the selection of genotypes at both the stages.
