For nearly two decades, doubling of the track on the Lotschbergline, the renewal of the infrastructure and the procurement ofhigher-power locomotives has had a heavy impact on the budget ofBern-Lotschberg-Simplon-Bahn. As a result, only inadequate fundsremained left for passenger stock upgrading. The railway wassuccessful in procuring 32 Type EW IV passenger coaches, butunsuccessful in purchasing the likewise urgently required vehiclesfor tourism to the Simmental and for long-distance express trains. Inview of this situation, Lotschbergbahn decided to implement afundamental renewal of its old Class EWI rolling stock, includingretrofitting with Automatically closing door and wheel slideprotection system as well as the installation of air conditioning onpart of the Coaches.
