Mr LaidLaw was educated at Eton before studying Economics and Law at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University. He qualified as a solicitor in 1979 and started his career in the oil and gas industry with Amerada Hess in 1981. There, he built their North Sea business before running their worldwide exploration and production activities and becoming President and Chief Operating Officer (1995-2001).
