AN EPIDEMIOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION OF PPR OUTBREAK IN SMALL RUMINANTS

Rinderpest and Peste des Petit Ruminants viruses (pestilence of small ruminants) are two important members of the genus "morbillivirus" in the paramyxoviridae family. Rinderpest, which till recently was one of the greatest scourge to afflict both large and small ruminant population has largely been eradicated. On the other hand, PPR which till recently was considered to be an exotic disease has come to stay as a regular feature in the country. This has now become a major constraint in the development of livestock farming system such as sheep and goat farming, which provide livelihood to millions of small and marginal farmers in the country.
