摘要

Femur fracture is one the most commonly encountered orthopedic problems in small animals especially in canines (Singh, et al., 1983). Many materials have been in use to repair bony deficiencies. Scanning of the literature showed usage of high densityplastic rods for femoral fractures in dogs (Church & Schrader, 1980), for tibial fractures in rabbits (Brown & Mayor, 1980), for humerus fracture in birds (MacCoy, 1983), fluoropolymer plastic intramedullary pin (Rowely and Pshyk, 1981) and methylmethacrylate coated iron nails for intramedullary use in femur fractures of sheep (Singh, et al., 1983). On the basis of favourable results reported from these studies and occasional surgeon's failure to procure an intramedullary nail of particular size and shape along with material which can meet all the desired physical and biological qualities, the present study was conducted to explore the feasibility of using plastic rods for mid-diaphyseal femur fracture immobilization.
