TRANSIENT IMMUNOSUPPRESSION INDUCED BY AVIAN REOVIRUS IN CHICKEN

In the present study it was found that the avian reovirus infected chicks had significantly lower humoral and cell-mediated immune response as compared to uninfected chicks. The stimulation indices of chicks infected with avian reovirus and vaccinatedwith Newcastle disease 'f' strain, one week post infection were significantly lower (P<0.05) at 2 and 3 weeks post-infection than those vaccinated with Newcastle disease 'F' strain alone. At 4 weeks post-infection, the stimulation indices' values did not show much difference in these two groups. Similarly the haemagglutination inhibition liters in chicks infected with avian reovirus and vaccinated with Newcastle disease 'F' strain were significantly lower (P<0.05) at 2 and 3 weeks post-vaccination than the chicks, which were vaccinated with Newcastle disease 'F' strain alone. At 4 weeks post-vaccination, the haemaggluti nation inhibition antibody titers were not significantly different in these two groups.
