Puerperal metritis and mastitis in bitches, though reported less frequently, are important causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Both are infectious disorders of early postpartum period, usually occurring in the first week after whelping (Magne,1986). The present communication deals with a case of acute metritis and: mastitis in a recently whelped Pomeranian bitch. Case history: An 8 year old Pomeranian bitch was presented to the refferal polyclinic of the Institute (Registration No. 2927, dated 26.4.2002) with a complaint of swelling of mammary gland and foul smelling vaginal discharge which was first noticed a day after whelping. Bitch had whelped seven apparently healthy pups a week back. However, the pups died one by one within 2-3 days of whelping after suckling milk of the bitch. The bitch was depressed, lethargic and had warm painful swelling in one mammary gland.
