Phytomedicines used for animal treatment by tribals in remote area of Nagaland

Considering the importance of phytomedicines and the indigenous technical knowledge involved in the animal husbandry and health management practices (Kumar et al., 1998; Rohilla et al., 1999; Gupta et al., 2000), an attempt has been made to collectand compile the information on the use of phytomedicines by the tribals of Nagaland for the treatment of some general ailments of animals. A survey was conducted covering the nearby and surrounding area of Pfutsero (Distt. -Phek), Nagaland. The information collected is as follows: 1. Burns and scalds (for all species of animals): For every degree of burn, a particular honey called Yiechodzu/Ruyodzu (local name) is applied by which healing takes place very rapidly. If the burn is very severe and skin surface eroded, fresh frog's skin is peeled off and pasted over the burnt area and kept for 3-4 days, which facilitates faster healing. 2. Maggot wound: A good quantity of fresh leaves of Temichiede (Ficus hirta) is fed to animal for 2-3 times, the maggotsare automatically repelled within 12 hours. 3. Abscess (for all species): When the abscess is fully ripen, it is drained by incising at the point. After opening the abscess, the opening is pasted with a plant's fruit called Gadzu (local name) and coveredwith a round leaf of Nhana (local name). This facilitates regular draining and therefore re-occurrence is prevented and healing takes place quickly.
