A NOTE ON SUB-CLINICAL GASTRO-INTESTINAL PARASITISM IN SHEEP AND GOATS IN LUDH1ANA AND FARIDKOT DISTRICTS OF PUNJAB

Parasitic diseases are of paramount economic importance in sheep and goats and are known to cause lowered resistance, loss of production and even mortality. At times, clinical outbreaks are not uncommon. However, sub-clinical parasitism is more widespread and insidious, and in general is responsible for retarded growth, reduced weight gain and loss of milk yield in animals (Soulsby, 1982). Although the prevalence of various gastrointestinal parasites of sheep and goats have been reported by several workers in northern India (Misra and Ruprah, 1968; Ghhabra et at., 1978; Dhar et al., 1928; Krishna et al., 1989; Kumar et al., 1989; Kumar and Singh, 1992), however the information on sub-clinical gastro-intestinal parasitism in sheep and goats in Punjab is lacking. Therefore a preliminary report of subclinical parasitism in sheep and goats in Punjab is presentedhere.
