GLANDERS: AN APPRAISAL AND ITS CONTROL IN INDIA

Glanders--Farcy is a much highly contagious disease primarily of equine i. e. horses, mules and donkeys. This disease affects the lymphatic system and manifests itself in the form of nodules, ulceration and degenerative changes in the respiratory passage or/and in the skin. This disease caused by Pseudomonas mallei is communicable to human beings and is an important occupational health hazard of veterinarians, farriers trainers, syces, owners of horses and occasionally laboratory workers who haadle infected tissues and cultures. Other species of susceptible animals include guinea pigs and hamsters, cats and occasionally ferrets, moles and field mice.
