The experiment was conducted in Thakurgaon, Bangladesh, during the 2006-07 cropping season. Estimates of genotypic and phenotypic variation, heritability and genetic advance for the characters number of tillers per hectare, number of millable canes per hectare, number of millable canes per clump, stalk height, stalk girth, 10 stalk weight, leaf length, green leaf, leaf breadth, brix percentage and cane yield per hectare were studied with 28 promising clones and two standard varieties of sugarcane. The genotypes differed significantly for all characters. The clones 1146-03 and I 134-03 could be considered as the best clones because of having maximum number of tillers (173.80x103/ha), number of millable canes (111.01x103/ha), cane yield (100.86 t/ha) and brix percentage (23.83%). Maximum stalk height and 10 stalk weight were observed in I 26-03. The maximum and minimum stalk girth was observed in I 238-03 and 184-03 respectively. The highest number of green leaf and the widest leaf breadth were found in the clones I 84-03 and I 6-03, respectively. In number of tillers, number of millable canes and cane yield showed high phenotypic and genotypic variance. The number of tillers, number of millable canes, number of millable canes per clump, stalk height, number of green leaf and cane yield showed high heritability and high genetic advance in mean percentage, which suggested that selection for these trait would be effective.
