Effect of potassium application on yield and juice quality of two different varities of sugarcane.

The effects of K application (at 0, 25, 50, 75, 100 and 125 kg K2O/ha) on plant and ratoon crops of sugarcane cultivars CoH-56 (early maturing) and CoH-110 (late maturing) were investigated in Karnal, Haryana, India. CoH-56 showed a significant increase in cane yield of both plant and ratoon crops up to the application of 75 kg K2O/ha, while CoH-110 showed a significant increase in cane yield of both plant and ratoon crops up to the application of 50 kg K2O/ha. The mean cane yield of CoH-110 was higher than that of CoH-56. The application of 75 kg K2O/ha significantly increased the cane yield of CoH-56 from 52.2 to 59.0 t/ha for plant crop and 55.58 to 65.44 t/ha for ratoon crop, over no K application. The application of 50 kg K2O/ha in CoH-110 significantly increased the cane yield from 63.7 to 73.6 t/ha for plant crop and 67.5 to 74.7 t/ha for ratoon crop. The relationships between K application levels and cane yield of CoH-56 (r2=0.98 and 0.97 for plant and ratoon crop, respectively) and CoH-110 (r2=0.96 and 0.97 for plant and ratoon crop, respectively) were significantly quadratic. The yield-contributing characters (cane length and diameter) were also increased with the application of K. The application of 75 kg K2O/ha significantly increased the commercial cane sugar percentage (CCS) of both cultivars and thereby sugar yield. The application of 75 kg K2O/ha increased the CCS of CoH-56 and CoH-110 from 12.36 to 13.01% and 11.27 to 12.58%, respectively, in plant crop and from 10.90 to 12.07% and 10.62 to 11.72%, respectively, in ratoon crop.
