Quizzed in front of an audience of her peers at the 2014 HR Directors Business Summit in Birmingham, Adams admitted she should have "challenged harder" as senior managers received payoffs totalling a reported £61-milLion, sparking media fury. But she insisted: "We were trying to save money. We have two per cent staff turnover in some areas [of the BBC], with people who have been there 20 or 25 years. We took £20-million a year off the cost base and 30 per cent of senior managers left.
