Potato aucuba mosaic virus (PAMV), a possible member of the potexvirus group, was frequently isolated from tamarillo (tree tomato,Cyphomandra betacea(Cav.) Sendt.) in 2 of the 3 major growing areas in New Zealand. Physical, chemical, serological, and biological properties of tamarillo isolates of PAMV (PAMV-t) are similar to those reported for the type strain of PAMV. PAMV-t was always found in mixed infections with a potyvirus, tamarillo mosaic virus (TaMV). Tamarillos mechanically inoculated with PAMV-t are normally symptomless; in naturally infected plants, symptoms of mixed infections with PAMV-t and TaMV are not noticeably different from those of TaMV infection alone. Aphid transmission of PAMV-t depends on the presence of TaMV.
