the world of gas metering is undegoing very significant changes. New metering technologies, with particular emphasis on energy metering and the remote capture of meter reading data, continue to evolve whilst meter manufacturers are in a phase of major rstructuring. However the most profound and far-reaching changes could come from teh development of competition in metering, the pace of which has noticeably quickened over the last 18 months. Chris Le Fevre describes the background to these developments, examines the present state of play and discusses some of the key issues that metering competition is raising for the gas industry.
