Australia has a proud history of successful medical research; however, the ageing of the medical research workforce threatens the continued success of these endeavours.1 Of particular concern is the decline in medically trained researchers or clinician-scientists due both to the imminent retirement of the current workforce and a reduced recruitment of new medical graduates to this career path. Changes in the sociodemographic composition of graduating cohorts and novel pressures of the professional environment in which they will practise will have significant implications for recruitment to these careers.
