I congratulate Coory et al. for their compelling case study evidencing the widely recognized need for a population-based approach to the collection and reporting of clinical indicators for cancer. This case study emphasizes that a population-based approach to the collection and reporting of clinical cancer indicators by centralized cancer registries provides powerful impetus to reduce variations in clinical practice and 'directly [points] to actions needed to improve quality of care'.
