In March 1988 opencast coal mining at the St Aidans extension sitenear Leeds was brought abruptly to a halt by a cata- strophic failureof the 70 m deep excava- tion wall and the resulting inundation bythe River Aire. This paper describes the planning, design, construction and recov- ery of the site, which involved the con-struction of the first significant new section of canal in the UK forover 90 years. Environmental considerations were a major factor atall stages of the design and construction.
