The issues raised by Hayes are very thought-provoking. Discussions about resuscitation are invariably sensitive and challenging for patients, their families, their doctors and their nurses. Resuscitation evokes a spectrum of emotions, as reflected in the quoted statements. Yet the rates of documentation of resuscitation status and family discussion remain appallingly low.
