Summary.Enamel matrix was isolated from forming canine teeth in monkeys and applied to experimental cavities in incisor teeth. In another experiment, enamel matrix from rat incisors was injected intraperitoneally; the peritoneal exudate was collected and grownin vitro. The dentine surface was covered by mast cells while a significant number of mast cells were present in the peritoneal exudate. Enamel matrix appears to be chemotactic for mast cells which may be involved in the initiation of cementogenesis
