The fixed abrasive grinding discs made of aluminium oxide orsilicon carbide which are normally employed in flat honing often need to becorrected for flatness when in use. This interferes with production andadversely affects workpiece quality. New developments in double-disc flathoning machines using diamond or cBN grinding discs give excellent resultsin terms of flatness, parallelism, surface finish and dimensional accuracy.With integrated partial and full automation now available on these machines,flat honing offers considerable advantages compared with surface grinding, asdescribed by A.W.Stahli.
