Evidence for the occurrence of the Ptarmigan Lagopus muta in the English Lake District in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries is based on at most three records, two of which may not be independent of one another. There are uncertainties attached to atl three records and it is concluded that they do not establish beyond doubt that Ptarmigan have existed in the area within the past 300 years.
