Rwandan anesthesia residency program: a model of north-south educational partnership.

Rwanda is a small country located in the center of Africa. It had attracted international attention because of the tragic genocide in 1994. Like any other sub-Saharan African country, it faces major problems of healthcare facilities and personnel, and high maternal and infant mortality. The insufficiency of healthcare personnel was made worse by the genocide when many of the medical doctors and paramedics were either killed or fled the country. The country has now only 1 medical doctor per 50,000 inhabitants and 1 nurse per 4000 inhabitants. There is a major shortage of specialists, and anesthesiology remains among the most understaffed area.
