Polyethylene (PE) is an excellent material for use in distributing fuel gas and has many advantages that wanrrant its continued use as distribu-tion pipe. However, as the installation of PE fuel distribution pipe increases, so does the incidence of static-induced ignitions. Static inside PE pipe represents probably the only detrimental characteristic of PE pipe. As GTI Research report 92-0460 noted, "As the use of PE pipe for gas distribution lines increases, the safety issues related to electrostatic discharge of PE pipe during repair operations continue to be a major concern to the gas industry"—Technical Perspective, page 4 line 1.
