Rapid cost decreases and size increases have made wind turbine generating systems realistic and profitable natural energy systems comparing well with conventional generating systems. Wind turbine generation excels over leading new energy rival solar power generation as regards space, costs and performance. Japan lagged behind the world's advanced wind power nations in introducing these systems but they are now spreading dramatically here so fast that they will achieve the 2010 New Energy Network Target (cumulative 300 MW) in 2002. There are 3 types of wind turbine generator: induction generators with pitch control and fixed pitch, and the synchronous generator. Each has its own characteristics and the type best suited to wind conditions and power network strength must be employed.
