In recent years, Dubal has focusedon reducing energy consumptionof aluminium electrolysiscells. Large industrialscale DX cell technology in theEmal Potlines 1 and 2 obtainedthe lowest energy consumptionin 2011, when they operatedat 350 kA and achievednet DC energy consumption of13.05 kWh/kgAl [1]. This camequite close to the world class oflow energy consumption cells,which are in the range of 12-13kWh/kgAl [2, 3].Emal Potline 1 and 2 resultsat 350 kA were obtained onnormal cells not specificallydesigned for low energy consumptionbut rather for highcell productivity, which was a more importanteconomic objective. Therefore, in 2012, theamperage was increased to 380 kA with consequentenergy consumption increase to 13.37kWh/kgAl (average for Jan to Oct 2013).
