'Using your environment': The development and implementation of a client-centred assessment tool for use with people who have intellectual disabilities

Carmona Services provides a range of services for children and adults with moderate to profound learning disabilities. Carmona strives to enable social inclusion and person-centred planning, guided by Personal Outcome Measures (1991)(POMs). Over time, we found that the section of POMs about how people use their environments lacked clarity. People with intellectual disabilities were rarely setting goals in this section. In the rare instances when goals were identified, they did not always relate to a person's needs or daily functioning. Furthermore, a day service review identified that service users wanted more independence and a wider variety of living options. A tool was therefore required to facilitate goal setting.
