New oxozirconium (IV) complexes with the Schiff bases derived from salicylaldehyde, 5-bromo-salicylaldehyde, 5-chloro-salicylaldehyde, 5-nitrosalicylaldehyde, 5-methoxysalicylaldehyde, 3-ethoxysalicylaldehyde, 3, 5-dichlorosalicylaldehyde and orthohydroxyoenzylamine have been synthesised and characterised by elemental analysis, infrared spectra, molecular weight, electrical conductance and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The Schiff bases behave as monobasic tridentate ONO donor ligands and form complexes of the type ZrO (LH)2(where LH2= Schiff base). The molar conductance and molecular weight data support their non-electrolytic and monomeric nature. The complexes are diamagnetic. The #x221A; (C=N) and #x221A; (C-O) phenolic frequencies have been used to indicate the coordination sites of the Schiff bases. The infrared spectral data suggest hepta-coordination in these complexes.
