We investigate a duplicated B-PON repeater to obtain its higher reliability, while we have already developed a single B-PON repeater that enlarges the distance between OLT and ONTs. First, we introduce an economical configuration for the duplicated repeater. Second, we propose automatic protection switching mechanisms for the repeater. For example, the repeater informs OLT of its state using vendor specific messages so that OLT can switch over it based on failures that the repeater detected. OLT ranges a working side before switching on detection of Signal Fail so that OLT can prevent undesirable switching by intermitted failures. We introduce a fault localization method that compares state of a working and a protection side before and after switching so that operators can easily fix it.
