Insults to the respiratory central nervous system or peripheral nerves can result in respiratory failure leading to prolonged ventilator dependency. Tests currently available to monitor diaphragm function are neither accurate to quantify recovery from diaphragmatic paralysis nor routinely performed at bedside, and predictors of diaphragmatic recovery are lacking. We report two infants with diaphragmatic paralysis secondary to botulism in whom assessment of electrical activity of the diaphragm (EAdi) measured with miniaturized sensors on a feeding tube monitored functional recovery.
