In spite of the increasing demand for large-scale Ethernet-based networks, there are still some problems with applying such networks as large-scale WANs. One of the most serious problems is the broadcasting of irrelevant traffic, which includes ARP broadcasting by end hosts. To reduce ARP broadcast traffic, the address cache at an end host is effective. In this paper, we derive and evaluate miss probabilities for the cache with time-out aging mechanism. In addition, we propose a simple application to design issues for Ethernet-based networks.
