Promotion of efficient use of energy and mitigation of the adverse environmental and health effects associated with the use of biomass fuels is an important policy issue in India. Despite a major shift from biomass fuels to commercial fuels, a considerable number of Indian households still use inefficient fuels such as firewood. This is not limited to rural areas where the choices might be constrained by lack of access. The use of LPG (liquid petroleum gas) is common in urban areas, but the use of less efficient fuels like kerosene and wood is still widespread.
