Effect of the Type of Cement and Aggregate on the Characteristics of Refractory Castables

Four castable samples containing two different types of refractory cements (cement containing 80 percent Al_2O_3 and cement containing MA spinel) with two different types of alumina-rich aggregates (tabular alumina and bauxite) were prepared in order to study how the type of cement and aggregate can affect the physico-mechanical and refractory properties of refractory castables. The physico-mechanical properties (bulk density, apparent porosity and cold crushing strength) were detected at cold as well as different firing temperatures up to 1500 deg C. Their constituents were investigated by XRD analysis. Castables containing MA spinel with bauxite or tabular alumina aggregate show improved physico-mechanical and refractory properties compared with castables from cement 80 due to their content of MA spinel and/or CA_6.
