Investigation of Some Characteristics of K-Feldspars from Samothraki Igneous Pocks for Use in the Ceramic Industry

Mineralogical, petrological and chemical investigations as well as technological tests were performed on feldspars from Samothraki island (N. Greece) igneous rocks in order to determine their potential use in the ceramic industry. The samples used were phenocrysts of K-feldspars hosted in the granitic batholith as well as some volcanic domes of the island, and a total rock samples. Inclusions found in these phenocrysts include mica, quartz, zeolite and some titanite. Specimens tested for technological characteristic were found to be high alkali material reaching K_2O + Na_2O 14.5 Mass-% and K_2O/Na_2O 3.1. Sintering takes place after firing at around 1100 ℃. The range of feldspar qualities studied renders them suitable for the production of whitewares and porcelain.
