Sol-Gel Process Synthesis of High-Temperature Non-oxide Ultrafine Powders

High-temperature non-oxide ceramics, such as SiC, Si_3N_4, Sialon, ZrB_2 and TiB_2, have been extensively studied during the last two decades since they can be used as structural materials in temperature conditions up to about 1500 ℃. They have potential application in various fields including advanced engines, gas turbines for power/steam cogen-eration, heat exchangers, heat treatment and material growth furnac-es, as well as in future nuclear reactors. This mini-review, summarizes recent developments in the preparation of high-temperature non-oxide ultrafine powders for structural applications by sol-gel processing. Compared to conventional solid-state reaction methods, the sol-gel process is a more effective means of producing high performance non-oxide powders including nitrides, carbides and borides with small particle sizes and even size distributions.
